The Veteran’ Parade is Saturday Morning at 10 in Quincy
It is hard to believe that Saturday will mark the 11th year for the revived Veteran's Day Parade in Quincy.
After several years of not having a parade, Dick McKinney and Jim Ponsot spearheaded a movement to resurrect the Veteran's Parade 12 years ago. I was one of the fortunate people they contacted to see just how to get a parade going since I had been running the St. Patrick's parade for years here. I was more than happy to give them what guidance I knew. They did the rest in getting the ball rolling.
Each year the parade has seen growth and has even included several flyovers in past years. Orchestrating a flyover is not an easy process, but they have pulled it off over the years.
Saturday's parade begins at 10 a.m. and starts at 12th and Maine and runs to 5th and Maine ending at Washington Park.
It appears that this year's event maybe one of the coldest they will have had to deal with as temperatures are forecast to be in the lower 20's at parade time. A parade is only as good as the people watching it so please come despite the cold weather. Bundle up and support these wonderful Veterans in our area Saturday morning.
I'll see you Saturday as I help carry the Exchange Club's huge American Flag in the parade.
There will once again be an afternoon parade at the Illinois Veteran's Home for those residents there who could not make it out to the morning parade. The afternoon parade will be held at 1 p.m.
