Should College Athletes be Able to Unionize?

It has been a long standing question of should college athlete be paid for what they do? This thought process has now led football players from Northwestern University to try to unionize.

A first hearing conducted by the National Labor Relations Board was heard Wednesday in Chicago. The effort by the Northwestern players is being financed by the United Steelworkers Union and if approved would give college players to right to be represented by a union.

It is a move that the NCAA and the Big Ten Conference has criticized saying that the players are not employees of the school so they should be prohibited from unionizing. The players argue that the schools use their talents and services to make money and therefore they act as employees.

It should be very interesting to see how this comes out.  It could have far reaching consequences for all colleges and universities including Quincy University, Western Illinois University and Culver-Stockton College.
