New Madrid Fault Waking Up? Sudden Swarm of 7 Quakes in Days
The New Madrid Seismic Zone had been relatively quiet to start 2026, but that appears to have changed as the USGS has confirmed a mini-swarm of 7 quakes in just the past few days.
I'll start with my usual disclaimer that most will ignore. There is no reason to be worried, alarmed or panic about a mini-swarm of earthquakes along the New Madrid Fault in southern Missouri. I believe it's wise to pay attention to activity along this region which is among the most seismically-active in the United States. With that being said, I noticed a couple of quakes that happened relatively close together earlier today along the New Madrid Fault and then learned that there have been at least 7 earthquakes confirmed by the USGS just since February 28, 2026.
What does a sudden uptick of quakes along the New Madrid Fault mean?
The honest answer is nobody knows. Yes, it is a big increase in activity compared to February which only had 6 confirmed quakes for the entire month, but there's no way to know if this is just the typical ebb and flow of seismic activity in this part of Missouri or the lead-up to something major. No matter what anyone claims, there is no way to predict earthquakes yet. I share this new surge of tremors because I find it interesting, but still no reason to worry. All of us in Missouri should be earthquake aware and prepared at all times. You never know when the major event we've been warned about will happen. It could be 50 years from now or today.
