Most text scams are not difficult to identify, but there's a new warning from the feds for Missouri truckers of a new scheme that's all too believable considering what they do for  a living and it's robbing thousands.

I first saw this new text scam targeting truckers from CDL Life. It's a warning from the Federal Trade Commission that has claimed many victims in Missouri. Here's the graphic shared by the FTC showing what many truckers in Missouri are receiving on their phones.

Many over-the-road drivers have to travel through many tollways and many are camera-operated, so receiving a notice about an overdue toll charge is very believable. Here's what the FTC says to do if you receive one of these texts:

  • Contact the state toll agency directly and do not click any links in the text
  • Choose the "report junk" option on your phone to mark the text as illegitimate
  • Contact the FTC and report the illicit text

As a general rule, I NEVER click a link in a text even if it's coming from a known source or contact. I will always manually contact any person or organization directly through known trusted methods if a message has any chance of being legitimate.

It angers me to see truckers in Missouri being targeted like this. It's challenging enough to have to live your life on the road without having to deal with losers trying to rip them off.
