Your furnace and/or your space heater is about to become your best friend and ally as the most widespread cold in a decade is about to descend on Missouri and it likely won't end quickly either.

This warning is not coming from sensational internet weather personalities either. Even the National Weather Service in St. Louis, Missouri is talking about an invasion of arctic air that will begin to truly impact Missouri beginning Sunday, January 19, 2025. They just shared this graphic today advising everyone to prepare for this incoming cold.

If you look at the National Weather Service forecast for many parts of Missouri, you'll see lows Sunday night of only 1 degree above zero and Monday night maybe even colder. That's not the only problem. If you look at wind chills, that will take the "feels like" temperatures way below zero to near record levels. This is what Monday, January 20 wind chills look like.

The bottom line is any activity outside from Sunday through at least next Tuesday, January 21, 2025 will risk any exposed skin you have. The place you live will have jeopardized water pipes if precautions aren't taken and you'll want to be certain that your heating elements are in good shape.

The National Weather Service is right when they ask everyone to check on elderly neighbors and vulnerable family members. The last time we had this much of Missouri be this cold was back in 2014, so prepare now for the coldest snap in a decade. Missouri's winter is about to flex its muscle big time.
