I trust nature. Animals have a way of knowing things that us human beings cannot detect. For example, you know you're in trouble in Missouri if you see pigs start to gather sticks because nature knows.

While my grandma had a farm in Missouri, I was never much of a farm worker. I followed one of her horses around a pasture once, but that hardly qualifies me as a farm animal expert. I have heard my share of Missouri farm tales (or should that be "tails"?) and one involves pigs and sticks.

Why is it big trouble in Missouri if pigs gather up sticks?

I'm not the only one that's heard about this legend as Farmer's Almanac also mentions that pigs picking up sticks means Missouri is about to experience a harsh winter. Sound funny to you? The Successful Farming website mentions pigs and sticks being a harbinger for a bad winter, too.

I saw a Colorado farming Facebook page drop this truth also.

You likely think it's funny to watch pigs to determine future weather events, but I'll be paying more attentions to pig activities as we get closer to winter because nature knows.
