60 Missouri and Illinois Stores Suddenly Rationing Eggs
We really shouldn't be surprised, but it has begun. Some stores in Missouri and Illinois have started rationing the number of eggs you can get at one time.
I saw this on the International Business Times. It's a decision made by specific retailers about their supplies of eggs. If you happen to shop at Trader Joe's or Costco, you will now see a limit of 1 carton of eggs that you can buy in one visit. Panic buying is one of the reasons why stores are now limiting amounts.
There are currently 23 Costco stores in Illinois and 9 in Missouri. Scrape Hero says there are also 23 Trader Joe's locations in Illinois while there are currently only 5 in Missouri. That brings the total number of stores rationing eggs in both states to an even 60, but I'd be surprised if more chains don't follow and start rationing their egg supplies, too.
Why are eggs so expensive right now?
This is a result of the explosion of bird flu cases and millions of chicken flocks have been affected including Missouri and Illinois. When you have less egg supplies to draw from, the price will go up and the availability will go down. The egg rationing we're seeing in both Missouri and Illinois right now is the result of bird flu cases and it isn't likely to improve any time soon.
