Mini-flurry of New Madrid Quakes Friday – 1 Near Missouri Airport
It's been a busy Friday along the New Madrid Fault in southern Missouri as a mini-flurry of tremors have been felt including another one near a tiny airport in the boot heel.
There is nothing to really be concerned about at this point. There has been a sudden uptick in activity along the New Madrid Seismic Zone that I find interesting and you might also. After a period of relative calm for the first 3 1/2 months of the year, southern Missouri has now entered a time of almost constant quakes including a couple that just happened Friday morning.
This includes yet another near the county airport in southern Missouri that has been the center of several quakes over the past few weeks.
That means there have now been 7 New Madrid quakes in just the past 7 days. That's a substantial increase in activity considering there were only around 20 for the entire month of April.
All that being said, none of these quakes have been damaging or even large enough to be flet by most of the population of extreme southern Missouri. It's just an interesting burst of activity from our earthquake fault that has been drowsy this year - until now.
