Today is President’s Day, a Federal holiday for many and a regular day for others. It is actually a holiday for employees of Townsquare Media, owners of Y101, KICK-FM, KHMO and KICK-AM. As a result our offices will be closed today and will reopen tomorrow at 8 a.m. We used to celebrate George Washington’s birthday on February 22nd but Congress decided to change it to the third Monday of February back in 1971.  After the change of date, it was still known as Washington’s Birthday even though it never fell on Washington’s actual birthday.

It wasn’t until the mid 1980′s that it became known as President’s Day thanks to a push from advertisers. So the name “President’s Day” has never officially been recognized as such by Congress. Ah, the power of advertising.
