Simulation Shows EMP Over Illinois Would Result in 90% Perishing?
I'll start by saying that I think the answer to this question greatly depends on what part of Illinois you live or happen to be in if this ever happens. A new simulation claims that an EMP over Illinois would result in 90% of the population perishing, but it's much more complicated than that.
First, let's not assume that you're familiar with what an EMP attack is. It's an electromagnetic pulse blast which would all but destroy existing power grids.
I saw this new artificial intelligence simulation of an EMP attack over the Midwest by the How to Survive YouTube channel and it brings up some thought-provoking questions and some answers. It's conclusion? 91% of the population in Illinois and surrounding states would not make it.
Since I rarely accept one source of information for conclusions on crucial issues like this, I dug deeper and found a long testimony that was presented to Congress entitled "ELECTROMAGNETIC PULSE (EMP): THREAT TO CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE". It's full of complicated discussions about what would happen if either an enemy unleashes an EMP weapon or if the Sun erupts in a Carrington-level event like happened in 1859.
Why would so many in Illinois perish after an EMP attack?
First of all, your survival would likely depend on 3 different factors:
- What part of Illinois you live in
- What time of year did the EMP event happen in
- How much preparation you did prior
The closer you are to a major metro area like Chicago, the more immediate danger you would likely be in. If the EMP event were to happen in the middle of winter, millions would likely freeze without ready access to heat. If you did not have stored supplies of non-perishable foods and water, your likely survivability would decrease exponentially.
I don't doubt that many in upstate Illinois would be in grave danger in the weeks following an EMP attack or event. Those in rural areas that already have access to wood for burning and some goods stored would stand a much greater chance to make it.
Let's hope this simulation never becomes a real-world reality. It would also be awesome if the powers that be would do more to protect infrastructure from such an apocalyptic event. It will happen one way or another sooner or later. Let's hope it's that last one.
