We're approaching the one date on the calendar when it feels like everything changes. That's because it kind of does. January 1 not only brings in a new year, but in Illinois also means 4 new Illinois laws will take effect. The question is will they affect you?

I just received an email from Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias. It detailed 4 new pieces of legislation that will become the law of the land once the calendar flips to January 1, 2026. Here's the Cliff Notes version of what they are and what they mean:

Road Safety and DMV Modernization - HB 2983

This new law is interesting in that it deals with cheating on DMV exams. I plead the 5th amendment. It also has to do with written DMV exams being available online and bicycle safety. As far as cheating, this new law means using your smartphone or a hidden microphone means you're busted.

Enhancing Library Security - SB 1550

This new law allows local libraries to "have the ability to request funding to install equipment, including security cameras, silent alarms or security checkpoints". Don't harm your local librarian or those that volunteer or work there. We shouldn't need a law to make people abide by this.

Cracking Down on Rogue Towers - SB 2040

Illinois is cracking down on predatory towing companies. This new law allows suspension of registration for companies found guilty of doing it plus protects personal property left in towed vehicles.

Enabling Court of Claims E-Filing - HB 1576

The Illinois Secretary of State says this new law helps "create new conveniences for Illinoisans by enabling the court to hold sessions remotely and allowing the public to file claims, provide evidence or testimony, and pay fees electronically".
