FBI Warns Missourians of New Insidious Cryptocurrency Job Scam
Cryptocurrency may well be a vital part of all of our futures, but right now it's at the heart of a job scam that the FBI is warning Missourians about involving potential employment.
The FBI has posted this alert on their website. It's what they warn is a cryptocurrency job scam that is victimizing many in Missouri and other states. Here's how the perpetrators try to trick you.
- The perpetrators will try to lure you into contact through social media or texting
- They will pretend to represent a real person at a real cryptocurrency company
- The job will involve what they describe as an effort to "bolster the reputation or efficiency of a company"
- The entire job will be click-based
- They will insist on you depositing your own cryptocurrency or money claiming you will gain a larger commission if you do
The problem gets serious when you reach the point where you're providing your banking information for the deposit. Once that's complete, they will drain your account until it's dry.
If you have become a victim of this scheme, the FBI wants to know about it, but they offered some very specific advice and warnings about contact saying this:
"The FBI will never ask for money, move communications to private messaging apps, or request bank account details or personal identifying information."
The safest course of action is to contact your local Missouri FBI office and let them know what happened.
