It's hard to fathom how much of Chicago's history (much of it tragic) can be buried in just one place, but that is the case for a cemetery in Illinois that contains the remains of Al Capone and some of his most notorious mobsters and even rivals.

The Mount Carmel Cemetery in Hillside, Illinois is one of the more visited places in the state thanks to some of its many "residents" who were responsible for some of the most notorious crimes in American history. Al Capone and much of his family along with mob associates have their final resting place here although "resting" might not be the right word.

Here's the list of those interred in this Illinois cemetery according to Wikipedia:

  • Al Capone
  • Frank Capone

  • Vincent Drucci
  • Sam Giancana
  • Genna Brothers – Sam, Vincenzo, Pete, "Bloody" Angelo, Antonio, and Mike "The Devil"

  • Antonio Lombardo
  • "Machine Gun" Jack McGurn
  • Charles Nicoletti

It's hard not to just outright condemn all of the criminals for their evil acts, but it's also important to remember they lived during a different era. Not condoning anything they participated in, but just recognizing it was a different world in the early 1900's. No doubt they forever shaped that era in Chicago history.
