If you need to burn anything later this week in Missouri, you really shouldn't and there are very good reasons why.

I saw this stern warning from the National Weather Service in St. Louis today advising everyone to avoid burning anything this Thursday and Friday.

The warning is specific for central and northeast Missouri and west-central Illinois due to dry and windy conditions. You would be surprised how fast a fire can get out of control once a strong wind gets ahold of it.

One look at the US Drought Monitor shows you why Missouri is an elevated fire danger right now.

It's interesting that some of the bigger rain events that Missouri experienced earlier this year seemed to be improving drought conditions to the point where the state was back closer to normal, but that's sadly not the case right now.

After a few days of chilly temperatures early this week, Missouri will experience warmer temperatures again as we get close to the weekend.

Warm temperatures, dry ground and foliage with windy conditions is a perfect storm for potential fire trouble. That's why the authorities are saying leave any and all burning to professionals only.
