Doomsday Plane Seen Flying Over Northeast Missouri This Week
Missouri is near where the US military's secret "doomsday plane" fleet is based, so it's not unusual to see one every now and then over our head. However, many on social media noticed one over northeast Missouri which just happened to coincide with a time of crisis.
Never underestimate the Missouri sub-Reddit to notice and share interesting things. I believe it was 4 days ago that someone spotted a Boeing 747-E4B flying over the northeastern part of the state near Kirksville. That is a US Air Force "doomsday plane" code-named GORDO61.

Why was a "doomsday plane" spotted over Missouri?
There were two major world events that happened on May 9, 2026 which made some wonder if the plane was directed to take to the skies in the event of a national emergency:
- The U.S. Navy and Central Command reported firing on Iranian tankers attempting to breach a naval blockade
- That was the day the cruise ship with the reported outbreak of Hantavirus cases arrived in port
If you're not already aware, the "doomsday planes" are the US military's command and control in the skies in the event of a national or international emergency. It's a fail-safe way for the US government to know they'll have command and control of forces and systems in the event that a catastrophe happens on the ground. Was the "doomsday plane" over Missouri a response to what's happening in the Strait of Hormuz or the Hantavirus outbreak? We'll never know for sure, but I'd vote for this just being a coincidence as the doomsday plane fleet is based at Offutt Air Base in southeastern Nebraska and Missouri just happens to be in the path for these planes when they fly east.
