Yes, Missouri Gets 10% of Its Electricity from a Nuke Power Plant
Is there a phobia for people that are afraid of nuclear things? Asking for a friend. There's no reason to fear (I hope) the fact that Missouri does get a tenth of its electricity from one nuclear power plant which also happens to be the biggest in the state.
I must confess that I forgot that Missouri had a nuclear power plant. I do remember seeing the towers of many reactors one time when I drove through Arkansas, but I had forgotten the Show Me State had one, too. Thanks to A-Z Animals for the reminder.
The nuclear power plant in question is the Callaway Energy Center. It's an intimidating sight when you drive by it.
Couple things I did not know about the nuclear power plant in Missouri is the fact that it first went online in 1984 and is responsible for 10% of the state's electricity.
The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has some other interesting facts about nuclear power including the fact that no new plants are planned and/or being built. They also added this factoid:
The University of Missouri Research Reactor and the Missouri S&T Reactor offer students, researchers, scientists, and engineers across the country the opportunity to make discoveries across many disciplines in a safe environment
The key phrase that caught my eye was "in a safe environment". Promise?
Somehow my mind envisions scientists accidentally creating a black hole in the middle of Missouri, but that's probably just more proof that I watch too many movies on the SyFy channel.
