Have you ever learned something was a thing that you didn't realize was a thing? That's my reaction to the news that a baby bison has just been born at an accelerator lab in Illinois. Yes, an accelerator lab.

The Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory is one of the more fascinating places in Illinois. All sorts of unique research happens there and apparently bison happen there, too, as they just announced a baby bison birth. I saw this mentioned also on the Illinois sub-Reddit.

Why are bison at the Fermi National Accelerator Lab in Illinois?

When Robert R. Wilson founded the laboratory in the late 1960's, he bought a herd of bison because he believed that they represented the frontier which he also connected to the research into particle science. It was the "wild frontier" so to speak which is why the bison connection happened. Fermilab is also located on restored tallgrass prairie land which is what native bison used to thrive on before civilization took over in the 1900's.

If you had baby bison being born at a particle acceleration lab in Illinois on your 2026 bingo card, you win.
