Already 21 New Madrid Fault Quakes Have Shaken Missouri in 2025
The new year is off to a shaky start on the southern Missouri border thanks to a very active New Madrid Fault which has already shaken the state 21 times in 2025.
I've noticed there have been a few tiny quakes along the New Madrid Fault this last week of January which made me curious about what the total for the month is so far. I was surprised to see the USGS earthquake catalog reveal a grand total of 21 quakes in Missouri this year already.
If you don't follow the New Madrid Fault as closely as I do, we see small tremors along the southern Missouri border all the time. It normally averages out to just 1 per day, but it's fairly frequent. What I did not expect in January so far are the numbers of above 2 magnitude quakes that we've seen.
Still, not one of these quakes was strong enough to do any damage and aren't really outside of the norm. It's simply a fairly enthusiastic start for the new year from the earthquake fault we hope doesn't ruin all of our days at some point in the near future.
It's a good idea to check the USGS earthquake page every now and then to see what the New Madrid Fault is up to. Hopefully we'll see just another boring normal month of tiny quakes heading into February.
