There's not much that happens in Cooter, Missouri and residents there will likely tell you that's a very good thing. However, something did just happen this morning in tiny Cooter, Missouri as an earthquake just happened and it was big enough to be felt.

I was doing my daily check of the USGS earthquake page this morning when I noticed that the New Madrid Fault had done something. There was an earthquake at the very bottom of the Missouri Bootheel and the epicenter was about a block north of the main drag of Cooter, Missouri.

This Cooter, Missouri quake has been reviewed and confirmed by a seismologist at the USGS. Mind you that a 2.2 will not even cause a dish to fall off the shelf, but that's still not a totally insignificant quake by New Madrid standards. There have been multiple quakes in this vicinity that were in the 1.5 range, but this one could have been felt by one of the 322 people that call Cooter home.

I was wondering if we'd see an uptick in New Madrid Seismic Zone activity after the huge 7.0 magnitude quake that shook northern California yesterday. It's not uncommon for earthquake faults hundreds of miles away to have activity after a mammoth quake like that happens.

Cooter is often mentioned in lists of the funniest town names in Missouri. Let's hope this tiny Cooter, Missouri quake isn't a foreshock for something bigger. I'll bet you that this will be the biggest news in Cooter today or at least I hope so.
