It began as reports of UFO's over Illinois, but it didn't take long before everyone realized something else was going on. Numerous videos show what we know now to be space debris that was burning up in the atmosphere as it crossed the sky over the state.
According to a video share by Fox Weather, this is the remains of Starlink-5693, a satellite whose existence came to an end late Tuesday night, January 28, 2025.
There were multiple places in Illinois where this Starlink satellite was seen including the Quad Cities.
This was a widely-viewed event with some even in northern Michigan capturing video of the moment when this satellite burnt up.
According to the American Meteor Society website, this object was seen in 62 different locations with the vast majority being in Illinois, Wisconsin and Iowa. Here's one from Naperville, Illinois.
