Here we are, 13 years removed from the terrorist attacks on America on September 11, 2001. For me it still seems pretty fresh in the memory banks. This time of year always brings it all back, and the fact that I went to New York City and visited the 9/11 site this summer obviously makes it all the more real for me.

It takes your breath away to stand at the two reflecting pools, in the spot where the twin towers of the World Trade Center once stood. Reflecting pools is a perfect name for them, because you can't stand at that spot and not reflect on how things changed that day. There's no way to escape the images of airplanes flying into buildings, smoke and flames pouring out of those buildings, the collapse of both and the truly amazing rescue and recovery efforts that followed.

One thing I didn't expect to even notice, that I never even thought about until I was there, was the sound. The buildings foot prints... size of the area they took up... where very large, and now that entire foot print is occupied on all four sides by a steady flow of water falling from ground level, down into the pools. That's a lot of water falling and it makes quite a strong and constant sound. It's a peaceful sound, even as loud as it is though. It literally serves as a constant reminder of just where you are and why you're there.

I took several pictures of both the reflecting pools and the new Freedom Tower that now stands at the site. I hope you like them.
