For the second day in a row, there has been a New Madrid Fault quake that has been centered in an odd place and this one was felt by many southeast of Missouri in Tennessee.

At approximately 10:38am Thursday morning, the USGS initially reported that a magnitude 2.6 quake was confirmed in Jackson, Tennessee.

That has now been revised to a 2.4 magnitude quake, but already there are numerous felt reports coming in to the USGS.

Even a 2.6 magnitude quake isn't large enough to do any damage, but the fact that it happened in a field that's practically a part of the city of Jackson, Tennessee means it was felt by many.

This tremor follows another odd New Madrid quake that was confirmed by the USGS in northern Arkansas on Wednesday, February 12.

We see tiny quakes in or near the Missouri bootheel almost daily, so these small tremors are nothing to worry about. It's when I see New Madrid quakes in not-so-common places that it gets my attention. These strange location quakes this week are likely just an anomaly and not signs that a major New Madrid event is incoming. It's just a part of the fascinating and very seismically-active part of southern Missouri that is almost constantly on the move.
