Missouri Has Been Hit By 19 Times More Twisters in 2025 than 2024
It's no secret that Missouri has seen more tornadoes this year than in recent memory, but this data shows you exactly how much. The state has experienced 19 times more twisters so far in 2025 than the same time period in 2024.
Kudos to Accuweather for this amazing tornado statistic. It shows how many twisters each state had from January 1 through March 31 both in 2024 and 2025.
In a normal year (if there is such a thing), tornado season doesn't really kick into high gear in Missouri until April. This year has definitely been an exception to that rule. Compared to a meek 2 tornadoes for the first three months of 2024, Missouri has already been hammered by 38 tornadoes through the end of March.
Why has Missouri seen so many twisters in 2025 already?
It was just two years ago that the Scientific American documented how Tornado Alley is moving eastward. In past years, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas were the breeding ground for destructive tornadoes. If you look at the map, that seems to have come true and Missouri, Illinois, Mississippi and Alabama have now seen the most tornadoes in 2025.
The frightening fact is we're barely into severe storm season. What will the rest of April, May, June and July hold in store for us? Hopefully, March was not an indication of what is still to come.
