Strong, Damaging Winds May Hit Missouri Sunday
This was an unexpected development. The Storm Prediction Center has suddenly placed Missouri under an advisory warning of a possible damaging wind and storm event on Sunday.
My wife, the meteorologist extraordinaire, gave me the elbow to alert me that there was a weather development that I needed to know about. It's a new advisory from NOAA's Storm Prediction Center about what Missouri now needs to watch out for Sunday, June 29, 2025. This is their newly-updated map of what areas need to watch out for severe weather.
What is the main storm threat for Missouri?
There's a lot of weather nerd terms used in the meteorologist discussion at the Storm Prediction Center, but here's the key phrase for what we need to be aware of:
"deep-layer shear should favor a few organized clusters capable of producing widely scattered damaging wind gusts during the afternoon"
I asked for an explanation for someone like me with a 2nd grade level understanding of the world and I was told that there will be a lot of instability in the atmosphere and conditions would be favorable for storm development due to high CAPE values. If and when storms develop, there will be plenty of energy over Missouri to allow them to cause storms with wind damage potential. Tornadoes are not expected to be a big factor Sunday, but that doesn't mean they can't develop if the storms are strong enough.
Sunday, June 29, 2025 is another day when Missouri will need to be severe weather aware with multiple ways to get storm warnings if/when they are issued by the National Weather Service.
