Having been born and raised in Missouri (please don't blame that on the state), I have never thought that I had an accent. That's why I was very surprised to learn that not only is there a Missouri accent, but it's the least trustworthy in America. Who knew?

Who Knew? Missouri Accent Ranks Dead Last in Trust

I normally consider Reader's Digest to be a reliable source. Read plenty of their magazine while I was in the...well, let's just say I read a lot of Reader's Digest. But, I must call into question a new ranking they shared very recently that says the least trustworthy accent in America is in Missouri...in the heart of the Midwest. I could be partially to blame for this since I am not the most trustworthy person in America and I am from Missouri, but it's their #1 choice that makes me wonder where they got their data from. At the top of their ranking is the accent from Boston. Really? Have you never met a Kennedy and/or Red Sox fan?

Is there really such a thing as a Missouri accent?

The University of Missouri says yes. They say there are different accents for northern and central Missouri compared to the southern half of the state and St. Louis has it's own accent which is described as having a "unique merging of vowels". "Ozark English" is definitely a thing in southern Missouri. Just strike up a conversation with a local in Branson and you'll see what I mean. The state's dialect is constantly changing, too, so don't be surprised if we've morphed into something completely different in a decade. Oh, and based on the survey by Reader's Digest, you better not trust us either. Ya hear?
