March is National Colon Cancer Awareness Month
National Colon Cancer Awareness Month is an annual celebration observed during the month of March, to increase awareness of colon cancer.
Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in the United States and the second leading cause of death from cancer. Colorectal cancer affects people in all racial and ethnic groups and is most often found in people age 50 and older.
Because colorectal cancer often doesn’t cause symptoms until it is advanced, the American Cancer Society recommends regular colorectal cancer screening for most people starting at age 50. A colorectal cancer screening can save your life. It is one of only a few cancers that can be prevented through screening.
Locally, Family Planning believes great awareness leads to the meaningful action of making an appointment to be screened. A screening session can prevent future cases and may save lives. For more information, go to www.familyplanningquincy.org.
