‘Major Disruptions’ Coming to Missouri & Illinois Mail Delivery?
As the son of a postal worker, I can tell you for a fact that this would have created a crisis in our home. There are reports that 'major disruptions' could be coming to Missouri and Illinois mail delivery and you'll never guess in a million years why.
I saw this topic come up just a few days ago on a Rural Mail Talk message board and it's a real possibility. It says "US Postal Workers Could Take Over Census" and they're not joking. I saw The Sun report that this is an actual recommendation in the government right now.
I am no expert and will not weigh in on whether I think this is a good idea or a bad one, but I do have so many questions. Does this mean that a Missouri or Illinois mail carrier will be stopping a a home, deliver the mail and then ask the people living there census questions? If so, that will make a mail delivery route take forever.
If the mail carriers become census workers, will they instead have to work nights and weekends in addition to their daytime mail delivery just so the mail delivery isn't interrupted and/or delayed?
I will add this. My dad was a friendly guy, but he would have HATED stopping and knocking on doors to ask census questions. I have to believe many of the current Missouri and Illinois mail carriers would feel the same way. My perception is many already feel like they're work time is maxed. Adding to it might cause many of them to see other lines of work. Time will tell if this proposal becomes reality in 2030.
