Legend Says Lost City Found Under Moberly in 1885, But Covered Up
You would probably laugh if I told you that there's a legend that says a lost city was discovered under Moberly in 1885. But, what if I told you I can prove that at least the legend is true and that I think I found evidence that its discovery was covered up? I have and I will.
I must give credit to a dude on YouTube who shared this story a few years ago. It was the beginning of my rabbit trail which went down a very deep hole. Here's the short version of what he shared. In 1885, an ancient city was found 360 feet down in a coal mine near Moberly. Don't believe me? It was reported on by The New York Times April 9, 1885. Here's a snippet showing their exact words so you don't think I'm making this up:
The city of Moberly, Mo., is stirred up over the discovery of a wonderful buried city, which was discovered at the bottom of a coal shaft, 360 feet deep, which was being sunk near the city.
The guy on YouTube explains what the rest of the article said about the plans for a follow-up investigation a few days later.
I can confirm that if you look for any documentation of a follow-up investigation, you'll find nothing. The fact that the investigation claims to have found the bones of giants leads me to believe that anything that was discovered was quickly covered up as has been done in the case of giant investigations over the years. The Smithsonian seems to go out of its way to try and shut down any talk of giants.
In the interest of sharing both sides of this, Jason Colavito shared the full text of the New York Times story including a retraction claiming that the entire story had been a fabrication. He termed it "a hoax". I do trust that what Jason shared is true. But, I would ask the question if the retraction was due to pressure from authorities.
Here are the facts that I can find. There was indeed a report in April of 1885 of a lost city found under Moberly, Missouri. There were claims in the month afterward that the story was fabricated. Now, you decide whether you want to believe the first part of what the authorities are telling you to believe now.
