VIDEO: Traffic Cam Captures Thunder Snow in Joplin, Missouri
As a winter storm system began moving across Missouri early Wednesday morning, one traffic cam captured a rather shocking moment when thunder snow happened in Joplin.
My wife (the obsessed weather nerd) messaged me this video which was shared by Weather Nation which seems to originate from the Missouri Department of Transportation webcams in Joplin. It's the moment early Wednesday morning when the winter storm was getting serious. Snow + Thunder (and lightning) = Thunder snow.
It seems like western and northwestern Missouri saw the worst of the winter storm Wednesday. Dry air greatly lessened the snow amounts that the northeastern part of the state received which I am a big fan of since I despise snow. The Joplin and Kansas City area did get most of the severe parts of this system. Storm chasers were able to capture some of the more rowdy parts of the storm as it began to impact Missouri.
There are indications in computer models that Missouri may seem like a parade of winter storm systems cross the state over the next few weeks. The thunder snow moment in Joplin, Missouri Wednesday morning may not be the last crazy winter moment this season.
