Another Illinois Walgreens Closing Permanently in Days

This makes you wonder when it will stop. It seems we're getting notifications of Walgreens closing locations practically every month. That's happened again as there is confirmation that another Illinois Walgreens will permanently close their doors in just a matter of days.

What Illinois location of Walgreens is closing in June?

Newsweek just released a complete list that includes 10 different states and Illinois is one of them. It states that the Walgreens Pharmacy at Northstar Health Care at 2835 N Sheffield Avenue, Suite 505 in Chicago, Illinois will close permanently on June 23, 2025.

Why is Walgreens closing so many locations?

According to USA Today, profits have continued to be down and there is a decline in drug reimbursement. Less walk-in retail traffic is still a factor in many brick and mortar locations shutting their doors and that trend doesn't appear to be slowing down anytime soon. The estimate in their story said that Walgreens plans to close around 500 stores between now and the end of August 2025. The grand total of underperforming stores that will eventually close will be around 1,200 before it's said and done.

Walgreens now offers what they call Virtual Healthcare where select states can offer online doctor consultation and prescription services. Will this be the way people get medications they need in the future and will this save the chain's business? We'll find out soon enough.
