Utility Bill Crisis in Illinois Worse Than Other States
There are few activities in life right now that are more terrifying than opening up an envelope (or email) that contains a utility bill. The prices for electricity for all families has skyrocketed this year, but new data shows Illinois is being hit the hardest and there's a sinister reason why.
There is a fascinating new study that's just been shared by Bloomberg. It's a deep dive into why utility bills have been skyrocketing in 2025 more than in past years. They point the finger at artificial intelligence data centers. It is due to their extraordinary energy demands that are overloading the energy grid which is driving up costs for you and me.
Utility bills are worse in Illinois than almost any other state
The map shared in this new study shows that Illinois is one of the top 7 states where energy bills have risen the most. Only New Jersey and a handful of eastern states have a higher percentage increase for utility bills than Illinois.
What can be done about the crushing electricity rates?
Some utility companies offer a budget plan which allows you to pay the monthly average for electricity rather than deal with the spike that normally hits hardest in the middle of summer and winter. That's very little consolation for many Illinois families who are already dealing with the inflationary costs of food and other basic needs of life. The fact that keeping the electricity on in your home has become so challenging makes the 2025 struggle an even greater burden.
