Illinois Truckers Warned by Feds of New Text Scam Targeting Them
Truck drivers in Illinois have enough dangers to watch out for on the roads every day and now they need to beware of a new threat through their phone. The feds are warning drivers in the Land of Lincoln of a new text scam that is targeting them and is especially a problem in Illinois.
I saw this shared by trucker website CDL Life. It's an urgent warning from the Federal Trade Commission about a new method that villains are using to try and rob truck drivers of their hard earned dollars. It's about a text claiming the driver has an unpaid toll and warns of consequences.
Why is this text scam such a problem in Illinois?
It's because of the Illinois Tollway. Their official website even issued a stern warning about Fraudulent Electronic Communications from criminals pretending to be them. They shared this warning:
"The Tollway has been alerted to a text message phishing scam claiming that recipients owe money for unpaid tolls and detailing a specific outstanding toll amount. These are not legitimate messages from the Illinois Tollway."
What can you do if you're an Illinois driver that gets one of these fake texts?
They warn drivers to not click any links in the text or to respond. Instead, they advise drivers to check their own account through the Illinois Tollway site. They also recommend calling their customer service. This is a vicious scam as it's not uncommon for a driver to have an unpaid toll, but the messages will not come from the Illinois Tollway in this form. Drivers beware.
