The good news is that Illinois has some great lake options. The bad news is that many of them also require some caution due to some natural residents. The fact is that the Illinois lake with the most venomous snakes also happens to be among the most popular.

I saw a recent ranking of Illinois lakes with the most snakes shared by World Atlas, but I wasn't really concerned about the majority of snakes that are relatively harmless. Among their list also happens to be an Illinois water place that has a healthy population of snakes that can do you harm.

The is Rend Lake in Illinois which has the very popular South Sandusky Beach.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources says that Rend Lake is the home of venomous Copperheads and also the Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake. Wildlife Illinois says to watch your step at Rend Lake as you don't want to irritate or surprise a Copperhead or Rattlesnake.

The other good news is that both Copperheads and Rattlesnakes tend to shy away from people. I've heard stories of some who have encountered aggressive Copperheads, but the majority of snakes venomous and non-venomous will normally only strike if you happen to reach into their habitat unknowingly.
