The City of Hannibal was named a 2015 Tree City USA for the 15th time. The Arbor Day Foundation recognizes cities for commitment to effective urban forest management.

Hannibal achieved Tree City USA recognition by meeting the program’s four requirements. Those requirements were a Tree Board, a tree-care ordinance, an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita and an Arbor Day observance.

The Tree Board is partnering with BASF in reforesting about three acres of city property east of Ely Street, directly across the street from Dempsey Dog Park. The tree-planting will take place April 16, in conjunction with Earth Day and Arbor Day.

BASF has purchased 310 trees to be planted at the site, with the help of Hannibal Parks & Recreation land preparation. Volunteers with gloves and shovels are needed to help plant the trees starting at 9 a.m.
