A Missouri sheriff is warning the public that an imposter has been calling residents and demanding money with fake arrest warrants. He's provided key things to watch out for to make sure you don't get scammed.

I saw the Greene County Sheriff's Department in the Springfield, Missouri area issue this warning on their Meta page today. It's in regards to and individual or maybe multiple people that are calling citizens claiming there is a warrant for their arrest.

In case you can't see his tips on your device, here's what the Greene County, Missouri Sheriff's Office says you should do and not do:

  • No one will ever call you from the Greene County Sheriff’s Department. We are the Greene County Sheriff’s Office.
  • No one from the Greene County Sheriff’s Office will call you to tell you about an arrest warrant.
  • No one from the Greene County Sheriff’s Office will ever ask you for money, money transfers or any other monetary exchange.
  • If someone does call you claiming to be a Greene County Deputy, tell them you will call them right back and then call the Greene County Sheriff’s Office main line (417)868-4040 to see if it was a legitimate call.

You should also be aware that with modern technology these scammers can make it appear that they are calling from a real Missouri sheriff's office. You should always hang up and call a known legitimate number from whatever Missouri law enforcement office that the person is claiming to represent. In this day and age, you can never be too careful.
