Some people will consider this superstition, but there are many who have for years been convinced that frequent early morning fog can be a warning for Illinois. That's exactly what's been happening for the past few weeks.

I want to be clear that I am NOT superstitious. I do, however, believe that a farmer's instinct is oftentimes the equal of the most complex computer models. When your livelihood depends on successfully working your land, you tend to get good understanding signs that might give you an edge on weather that's incoming.

Why is fog a warning for Illinois?

According to Farmer's Almanac, frequently early morning fog during the Fall months means a bad winter is coming. They even said in a Facebook status update that if you count the number of mornings with thick early morning fog, you'll know the number of big snowstorms coming that winter. 

It's fair to note that many meteorologists reject this way of detecting a bad winter.

Does that sound like ancient folklore to you? We'll know soon enough if this old farmer's beliefs does mean that a gnarly and snowy winter is coming for Illinois.
