I just checked what Farmer's Almanac predicted for the start of Missouri's winter and the results are astonishingly close. That may mean it would be a good idea to pay attention to what they say is still to come for the rest of winter in Missouri.

For the record, Missouri is in what Farmer's Almanac refers to as Region 10. Their prediction for the first part of winter was eerily accurate. They have more or less nailed the brief periods of warm that would happen after a big snow which happened a week and a half ago. That translates into my typical skepticism being gone since they've been correct so far.

What does Farmer's Almanac say about the rest of winter in Missouri?

Their 60-day forecast which was shared a month ago still looks pretty spot on. They're calling for bitterly cold for the week of January 20 which they say will be followed by a brief warmup. We kind of knew that already though.

It's their outlook for February in Missouri that is interesting.

  • First week of February - Sunny, then snowy and turning colder again
  • Second week of February - Snow showers then even colder
  • Third week of February - Flurries and cold
  • Last week of February - Bitterly cold

I'm concerned about the temperature trajectory in February. Cold, then colder...then bitterly cold? My furnace will need a rest at some point.

Saying that it will be cold in winter in Missouri is like saying that the sky will be blue and water will be wet. We know this, but the prediction of bitterly cold February to follow what could be a record-setting cold at the end of January is a little terrifying even by normal Missouri winter standards.

Now, let's see if Farmer's Almanac is as right about the rest of winter in Missouri as they were the first half.
