The legend of the Ozark Howler has been told for centuries in Missouri, but did you know that the stories of this terrifying creature have a real connection to history including Daniel Boone who warned settlers of its existence.

I am a fan of Josh Gates and his many Expeditions shows including Expedition Unknown, Expedition Files and the newest Expedition X which deals with both history and the paranormal. It wasn't that long ago that he and his team tackled the legend of the Ozark Howler including some real quotes from one of Missouri's most famous sons, Daniel Boone. He wrote a letter to his sister in law that said the following:

"It's black and swarthy with horns atop his scalp...I am told the sound that it makes...a terrible howling in the middle of the night...warnings of this for settlers should be passed along."

During the 1800's, the stories of the Ozark Howler were not treated as superstitions or wild imaginations that got carried away, but a real threat for those who had settled in Missouri to make the land their home. This episode of Expedition X explores the encounters that would become the legend of the Ozark Howler.

The Ozark Howler sightings began in the early 1800's and there are many that claim this creature is still active in the heavily-wooded areas of southern Missouri today. That's one of the reason that shows like Expedition X have filmed episodes in our state to explore whether Daniel Boone was right about what awaits anyone who dares to enter the uncharted woods.
