Or, at least, that's what you thought.

That's the situation St. Louis Cardinals' minor league pitching prospect Dalton Roach found himself in last Saturday.

According to a post on the Cardinal Nation Facebook page, Roach was deer hunting in Trempealeau County, Wisconsin, on land his family has owned for years.

As Roach was waiting for that trophy buck to happen along, he spotted a bear moseying through the woods, and he started taking video on his cellphone.

"He didn't look he was on any kind of a mission or anything," Roach said. "But when he got about 20 yards away, he took a left turn and came directly under my tree."

Roach stopped the video and realized that the bear was climbing his tree.

"The next thing I know I can hear him right behind me and feel him breathing on my back. Then I felt a paw on my lap," Roach said.

Roach wound up getting bitten on the back by the bear, and he was able to scare the bear off without further damage.

Roach got back to his truck and headed for the local hospital, where his wound was cleaned and he was given antibiotics, tetanus shot, and the first of 22 rabies shots.

Roach said he doesn't expect the incident to have any effect on his offseason training and baseball future.

Roach pitched for the Springfield Cardinals in 2021, after spending two seasons with the River City Rascals.
