School is back in session for kids around the region. Hannibal Public Schools' first day of classes in the 2014/2015 school year was Tuesday, and students in Quincy returned to class today. Many other schools have also started their years, and pretty much all of our area schools will be in session no later than August 25. The U.S. Census Bureau has release some interesting "fun facts" about education in the United States, just in time for the back to school season.

The estimated amount of money spent during the back to school season last year was $8.6 billion? Bookstore sales were estimated at $1.6 billion.

There are over 78 million students in the United States, from nursery school through college.

14% of college students are 35 and older.

The most common bachelor's degree earned by students is in business, followed by education.

As of 2012, the average earnings of full-time, year-round workers 18 and older with an advanced degree (bachelor's degree or higher) is $82,720.

We hope all of our area kids had a great summer, and we hope all the parents can now enjoy some much needed rest! Have a terrific school year!
