Today is D-Day, a Day to Remember June 6, 1944
Today is June 6. It’s a day that Americans should never forget. It’s D-Day! On June 6, 1944, Allied troops landed along a 50-mile stretch of heavily-fortified French coastline to fight Nazi Germany on the beaches of Normandy, France.
General Dwight D. Eisenhower called the operation a crusade in which “we will accept nothing less than full victory.” More than 160,000 troops, 5,000 ships and 13,000 aircraft supported the D-Day invasion, and by day’s end on June 6, the Allies gained a foot-hold in Normandy.
Unfortunately, the D-Day cost was very high with more than 9,000 Allied soldiers killed or wounded. As a result of D-Day, more than 100,000 soldiers began their march across Europe to defeat Hitler.
This area, more than other areas, is very good at remembering monumental days like today. The show of patriotism for Flag Day, Veterans Day and the Freedom Flights is very evident. Unfortunately, that is not always the case around the country.
Days like D-Day shall never be forgotten. Unfortunately, 76 years have passed since that infamous day and sadly as years go by less and less mentioning of events like D-Day and Pearl Harbor Day occurs. Today would be a great day to visit the All-Wars Museum at the Illinois Veteran's Home.
Please share this story today to remind everyone that we lost 9-thousand American lives on June 6, 1944 to preserve our freedoms we have today. God rest the souls of those brave soldiers.
