The Missouri Department of Conservation announced via a press release on their website that trumpeter swans had been counted at Loess Bluffs National Wildlife Refuge in Holt County. The tally on January 4, 2024 was 4,199.

The Missouri Department of Conservation said "almost extinct in the Lower 48 states, their numbers are being brought back thanks to wetland and migratory bird conservation efforts".

These pretty swans may not be in Missouri long though as a hard freeze has set in and that tends to cause them to find waterways elsewhere. Still, it's quite an amazing result for birds that almost went extinct to now be back in such big numbers.
