It's common sense to move away from any lane where you see an emergency vehicle along a roadway. In Missouri, it's more than just a good idea or suggestion though. As a matter of fact, you can get a serious fine for violating Missouri's Move Over law. It can cost you seriously big bucks.

You would likely be shocked if you knew the total number of emergency workers or law enforcement officers that are killed every year in Missouri while working along a roadway. It happens more often than you probably think.

What is the fine for violating Missouri's Move Over law?

A lawyer website in Missouri says that you can be charged with a Class A misdemeanor and be ordered to pay a maximum fine of $2,000.

I deal with this scenario every single week since I regularly drive Highway 61 in Missouri to get home. I regularly see a highway patrol car with someone pulled over and get into the left lane to avoid being close to the officer as quickly as possible, but there are times where that's impossible thanks to the multitudes who use the fast lane on Highway 61. The Missouri Move Over law allows for that possibility. If it's impossible to move away from the lane closest to the emergency vehicles, you can stay in the lane you're in providing that you greatly reduce your speed and proceed cautiously by the area where they are.

Common sense wins the day again. Let's hope that Missouri's very stringent law continues to save lives the way it was intended.
