I was promised that once Fall arrived, the critters that sting would go away for the season. There's a vicious type of hornet that apparently didn't get the memo as they are everywhere in Missouri right now.

One of the benefits of Fall in Missouri is the tendency for wasps and hornets to become less active. Thanks to our unseasonably warm weather, there's a hornet that is being spotted all over Missouri at the moment. I saw someone just share a picture on the Missouri sub-Reddit showing that the European Hornet is all over their trees.

The Missouri Department of Conservation says that these hornets tend to gravitate toward wood which is why you'll frequently spot them in or near trees, but they can build huge nests in your home or barn, too. Behold.

What happens if these European Hornets sting you?

The state of Missouri says they aren't a medical threat to most, but that "persons who are allergic to bee or wasp venom may have a life-threatening anaphylactic reaction".

I can tell you from experience that these hornets will oftentimes leave you alone as long as you don't threaten their nest, but if you cross that line and play with fire, you will get stung - a lot.

Until our weather finally realizes it really is Fall and cools off, watch out for these stingers. A close encounter of the wrong kind could lead you into a very bad day.
