This May Have Been The Most Unique Baseball Trade Ever Made
Being traded in baseball is a common thing. Quite often, players get dealt to other teams and no one seems to notice it. Well for fans in this area anytime the St. Louis Cardinals make a trade with the Chicago Cubs its big news. When you talk trade between these two teams every bar in the Hannibal-Quincy area will bring up the deal when the Cards got Lou Brock from the Cubs for Ernie Broglio. It was one of the most one sided deals in baseball.
That June 15, 1964 deal definitely favored the Cardinals who saw Brock go on to become a Hall of Famer. Broglio’s career went downhill from there. Poor Ernie. Imagine how he felt. That’s baseball I guess. And the beauty of it being we still talk about it today.
What isn’t talked about is the deal the two teams made on this date 98 years ago on May 30, 1922. The Cardinals and the Cubs were playing a doubleheader. In the first game, Cliff Heathcote played in the Cardinal outfield while Max Flack played in the outfield for the Cubs.
After the first game ended, the grounds crew were getting the field ready for the second game when the teams swapped players sending Heathcote to the Cubs and Flack to the Cardinals. So both players played for both teams on the same day against each other back in 1922.
So now you know!
