New Madrid Quakes in Missouri & Mississippi for 1st Time in Years

This has only happened once before that I can remember. Thanksgiving morning began with New Madrid quakes in both southern Missouri and the state of Mississippi, too.

My eyes did a double-take when I checked the USGS earthquake page today. There was an earthquake centered near the Missouri Bootheel (which isn't strange), but there was also one much further to the south in the heart of the state of Mississippi.

The magnitude 2.1 in Missouri happened at 2:33am, Thursday, November 28 while the magnitude 2.5 near Jackson, Mississippi happened an hour prior at 1:33am.

I did some research and found that the state of Mississippi says the last time an earthquake was centered in that state was 3 years ago in 2021. This map shows every single earthquake in the state's history and you can see it's not that many.

I did not realize that the New Madrid Fault does extend far enough south that it does include the central part of the state of Mississippi. I can't ever recall seeing a quake confirmed there at the same time as a Missouri quake. Granted that neither were strong enough to do any damage, the the USGS has confirmed that at least a few residents did feel the Mississippi state quake.

It's an odd way for the New Madrid Fault to say "Happy Thanksgiving" and let's hope there's not a bigger encore pending later.
