Southern Illinois Locals Report Black Bear Sightings
Considering how many sightings have happened in Illinois over the past few years, this really shouldn't be a surprise. If anything, I'm surprised it's taken this long. Multiple reports say many in southern Illinois have spotted black bears and the Department of Natural Resources has confirmed their sightings are real.
Where in Illinois have the black bears been sighted?
WTTW and WSIL-TV are both reporting that the black bear sightings are happening in St. Clair County, Illinois. According to the Department of Natural Resources, there have been numerous sightings this week including Monday, May 19 in addition to black bear appearances on Wednesday, May 21 and even Thursday, May 22.
These new black bear sightings in southern Illinois remind me of the apex predator that was spotted in the Gurnee, Illinois area last year.
What should you do if you spot these black bears in southern Illinois?
First thing on your to-do list should be to not get too close to the animal. Always allow bears an escape route and never run or you'll appear as prey (which won't end well for you or the bear). In addition, you should also contact the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
If you live in southern Illinois, do not leave any food sources outside. The Illinois Bear Wise at-home checklist is your friend as they also recommend taking down bird feeders if you live in St. Clair County where bears are being actively sighted. While bears will normally avoid human contact given the chance, they are also big fans of food. If your home is a reliable food source, they'll come back time and time again which is dangerous to you and the animal.
