It looks like a very peaceful Kansas City area lake, but watch where you walk because it has suddenly been ranked as one of the most snake-infested bodies of water in the state.

This one caught me totally by surprise. I have many friends and family that either have lived or still live in the Kansas City, Missouri region of the state and not one has ever mentioned this lake/reservoir as being a place where deadly snakes hang out.

Which lake is it that is suddenly one of Missouri's most snake-infested?

A-Z Animals says it's Smithville Lake just north of the Kansas City, Missouri metro.

What snakes should you watch out for at Smithville Lake?

  • Dekay’s brownsnake
  • western ratsnakes
  • common watersnakes
  • garter snakes
  • eastern copperhead
  • timber rattlesnakes

The last two are the venomous ones to be careful around. While most snakes will flee if they hear you coming, copperheads have been known to be aggressive if they feel like their habitat is being threatened (or they're just in a bad mood).

Yes, Table Rock Lake is still the most snake-infested lake in Missouri, but Smithville is rising on the snake charts and is increasingly becoming more popular as more and more people move to the ever-growing Kansas City area to call it home.
