Hundreds Feel Earthquake Near Historic Lincoln, Illinois Site

A historic part of Illinois directly connected to the early life of Abraham Lincoln was shaken by an earthquake strong enough that it was reportedly felt by hundreds Monday morning.

According to the USGS, an earthquake struck at 2:07am central time near this part of Illinois

This was a 3.5 magnitude quake centered near Salem, Illinois where Abraham Lincoln spent many of his formative years. He lived and worked in Salem from 1831 through 1837. There have already been 318 residents who reported to the USGS that they felt the quake and that number is rising with every minute that passes.

This is likely not a New Madrid Fault quake, but more likely the Wabash Valley Seismic Zone. While the New Madrid Fault gets most of the attention because of the historic 1811-1812 quakes, there are many seismologists who believe the Wabash Valley Seismic Zone is also capable of a magnitude 7 quake someday.
