Sudden Illinois Plant Closure Means 281 Will Be Out of Work Soon
The state of Illinois has been notified that a plant will be closing near the end of June which will result in the layoff of 281 workers based on information provided in the document.
A new WARN notice just posted to the Illinois Work Net Center website reveals a massive plant will be closing soon in Riverdale, Illinois. It says that Cleveland-Cliffs Riverdale LLC
of Riverdale will be closing the plant located at 13500 S Perry Ave around June 30, 2025.
According to the WARN notice published on the Illinois Work Net Center site, "plant closure" is the reason for this imminent mass layoff.
The company's website says they are "North America's largest flat-rolled steel producer and supplier of iron ore pellets serving various industries, mainly automotive". It's possible we'll learn the reason why this Illinois plant is closing on Thursday, May 8 when they hold their quarterly earnings call according to their website.
Let's hope this is not a permanent layoff and perhaps this dismissal of 281 is just a restructuring formality. It's also possible workers will be allowed opportunities at other locations. It shouldn't be long before we learn details behind this mass layoff in Riverdale.
The Illinois Work Net Center says this brings the total number of workers laid off in just the past 30 days to 1,156.
